The daily football quiz

It's good, but it's not right.

The daily football quiz

Postby Hughesy on Thu Jan 03, 2008 3:36 pm

I got one of those desktop mini-calendar things for Christmas, which has a different football-related trivia question for each day of the year. So I thought it might be an idea to share these questions with you all on here, to see if anyone can guess the answers.

There'll be a different question each day (and the answer to the previous day's question the day after - unless someone guesses it correctly in the meantime!), so without further ado, let's kick off wih the first question!

Can you name the three clubs that have won the Champions League in their debutant season in the competition?

Good question

Marseille 1993
Ajax Amsterdam 1995
Juventus 1996

are I believe might be the three to have acheived this in the repackaged Champions League format (silly "these are the chaaaampionnns" opera music, giant football banner in the centre circle) that commenced fully in season 1992-93.

If we are talking about the "old money" European Cup then you could also include

Real Madrid 1956 (obviously!!)
Internazionale 1964
Celtic 1967
Nottingham Forest 1979
Aston Villa 1982

who all took the trophy at the first attempt!

Tough question!

(Is anyone else finding this a phantom topic that keeps disappearing and reappearing a minute or two later? :? )

Very good, Chris! Wouldn't have had a clue on any of those answers myself. (the Champions' League first-timer winners or the European Cuppers!)

As that answer's gone, let's have tomorrow's question now...

...Oh blimey, this one will be too easy for you I suspect!

Which two Hibernian players scored braces in the 5-1 thrashing of Kilmarnock in the 2006-07 Scottish League Cup final?

The answer to that one was Abdesalam Benjelloun and Steven Fletcher.

Today's question is a two-parter:

Which footballer reached the milestone of 700 appearances for his club in the Liverpool v Manchester United Premiership match last March, and which footballing legend played his final game in the Premiership in the same game?

You were closest, Chris, having correctly guessed Ryan Giggs as one of the players. But I'm afraid no one takes full points on this one! The footballing legend playing his last game in the Premiership on that day was.... Henrik Larsson! (that was also probably only about his 6th game in the EPL! )

On to today's question:

Which team came very close in 2006 to being the first English club to lose consecutive matches in four different tournaments?

It was you know

Yes, the Arse had been beaten by PSV in the Champs' League, Chelsea in the Carling Cup, and Blackburn in the FA Cup, before narrowly beating Reading in the Premiership to put an end to the unfortunate sequence of results. A sequence I remember all too well!

OK, Monday's question is as follows:

In 2006, which player was named as the captain of Wales for the home Euro 2008 qualifiers with Slovakia and Cyprus in the absence of Ryan Giggs?
