Mind Your Language

Postby Hughesy on Wed Aug 05, 2009 9:52 pm

Stumbled on a video of this for 30p in a charity shop the other day. I'd not seen it since about 1992 when Sky used to repeat it at about 3am in the lunch breaks during overseas (mainly Australia v England) Test matches, and I used to watch it in a desperate attempt not to doze off before the afternoon session.

Anyway, I digress. It's really good! Not even slightly politically correct, maybe, but surprisingly funny. Great casting, great, daft storylines and some pun-tastic lexiconical misunderstandings. And, thankfully, no racist jokes!

Despite being pretty much brushed under the carpet in the UK the show still seems to be one of the most fondly-remembered overseas: most of the comments raving about it on the imdb are from people in places like India, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia. The whole of the Commonwealth basically! It seems to be biggest of all in India though. Just have a looky at all the comments praising it below too!

Would you Adam and Eve it? I went to the trouble of writing a post, was called away , returned, checked I was still logged in (otherwise I would have copied my post to paste it after logging in again) clicked on submit and the log in page came up

Anyway. Yes I remember this very well and can't understand why this comedy is so slated these days. Not many programes had such a diversity of nationalities depicted, and, although the characters were stereotypes, I think they needed to be to show that diversity. What the PC crown seem to forget is the foreign language students always had the last laugh, if anything, the programme is more insulting to the Brits.

Anyway, again, I wrote a bit more last time but this will have to do.
I'm not David Mitchell's Mom. I'd just like to adopt him. Nooo not David Mitchell the comedian. Little David Mitchell from Grange Hill Series Three!

Thanks Mrs M ;) I know all too well from personal experience what a pain in the arse it is when a post you've carefully crafted goes up in a puff of internet smoke, so fair play to you for coming back and starting again.

Having watched the whole three-series boxset now (29 episodes!) I have to say the episodes do get a bit samey and repetitive after a while. Still good fun, but not the greatest. You can forgive it though because the casting - especially of the pupils - was so great.

I know my Dad used to watch this. I think I saw a couple of episodes when they were repeated on SKY many years ago now. Seemed pretty funny, but very dated.

I used to love this. I saw it on DVD in a shop I was in earlier this week & was tempted to buy it but decided not to in the end. Decided to leave it to my memories. I've previously bought DVDs of shows I used to love & end up been quite disappointed.
