The recession

Postby Hughesy on Wed Nov 26, 2008 9:23 pm

So then, Woolworths and MFI have both gone into receivership. Just another day in cr**** ****ch (sorry, can't stand that phrase so I've asterisked some of it away ) Britain. What next? Marks & Spencer's to go to the wall? The government to nationalize Fern Britton?

Is it just me or is this whole recession thing starting to feel a bit surreal?!

What a shocker that was. The strange thing is I didn't really give it much serious thought when just banks facing problems, but, when Woolies is in trouble thats a tad worrying.

I'm not sure if it was on the national news or the local, but, it did make me think when a reporter was asking people to say what came to mind when Woolies name was mentioned. It's normally the last place of call when all other options have proved unsuccessful for me. :? Although, I know someone who'll be grief stricken if Woolies closes. He buys all his presents in the Woolies sales for the next year. Cheapskate

It was a bit mean of the Lotto people to whip the lotto machines out so fast though. The place is still trading! I might pop in tomorrow to see if there are any bargains :whome:

Anyone remember the half hour long ( or they seemed to go on for that long) Woolies Christmas adds from the 80's? Every celebrity in the world appeared in them.
I'm not David Mitchell's Mom. I'd just like to adopt him. Nooo not David Mitchell the comedian. Little David Mitchell from Grange Hill Series Three!

My friend ordered £1500 worth of bedroom furniture from MFI yesterday for her new flat
Luckily she's managed to cancel the order and get her money back!!

I suppose it is the way of the world for shops that were once a household name to some to go out of business. It has happened before and will happen again.

My team, Northampton Town FC, has decided to give away 250 tickets to the staff at the Northampton branch of Woolworths who are about to lose their jobs.

A nice gesture from a club not exactly in the strongest financial position themselves!

I could see this happening to Woolworths ten years ago at the young age of 16. Surprised it didn't happen sooner. I guess it means Toys R Us, The Entertainer and a couple of Specialist Shops are the only places to get toys for kids now. A real shame, but I'm sure I'll carry on somehow.

Well the big department stores have toy departments and of course Tescos sell toys aswell as everything else so I wouldnt worry about their being a national toy shortage just yet. There better not be anyway, I cant wait to have kids so I have an excuse to go shopping for Transformers and other sci fi toys like that. I was obssessed about things like that when I was a child and look forward to getting obsessed about it again if and when I have kids!
