Play.com now selling DRM-free downloads

At the risk of sounding like an advert for Play here, their new music downloads service does seem a lot better all round than iTunes. Play are selling individual mp3s for 65 or 70p, compared to 79p at iTunes; while full albums are £6.99 at Play, which is a whole quid cheaper than iTunes. With none of the Apple brand's dreaded Digital Rights Management technology either.

This is all good news for the customer, obviously, as hopefully some sort of price war will ensue now and prices could get lower & lower.

Of course, I always, always pay for downloads and I don't mainly get them gratis from blogs or nuffink, honest guv!

That's really good news! I've never got involved with iTunes and their insistence on using their software. I may buy more music as downloads if Play turn out to be good at this!

Just as a test of the breadth of their range, I entered a few favourite bands in their downloads 'search' field. Quite impressive actually! They have 4 complete Daryll-Ann albums (or 53 individual tracks) available to buy. Also The Sweptaways' Ooh Ahh album and (first) Christmas single are both there (again, as complete albums or individual tracks). No Hello Saferide or Popsicle as of yet though. But the Daryll-Ann and Sweptaways factors already leave them ahead of iTunes in my book!
