Where did i all go wrong Mr Savage? Moving them out London?
I just think somebody in the bbc tried to make a name for themselves by getting rid of it. They started by stripping it of everything that gave it its identity, stopped promoting it, even though it is one of their more famous "brands", and let it die with no one watching. Generations have grown up watching it and fondly remember it. They really dropped a clanger in my opinion. Expect them to do the same thing with Blue Peter soon.
People that say it is no longer relevant and that kids these days don't watch it are missing the point entirely. It is no longer relevant because the people who made it recently, for whatever reason, could no longer focus on what life is like for young people in this country. Hence the reason kids haven't been watching.
I read a quote from Lee Macdonald saying "if you tried to show what goes on in London comps now it would have to go out after the watershed".
I beg to differ:
1) Hollyoaks has dealt with violence, drug addiction, eating disorders etc, (but is still rubbish) and that is on at 6pm and is popular with the youth!
2) How come the 80s Grange Hill managed to deal with heroin addiction, bullying and death yet managed to be shown as part of children's televison? If somebody gets stabbed you don't have to show it in graphic detail, if somebody is being sexually abused you don't have to be pornographic about it. You can deal with these issues in a realistic, sensitive way. The only thing you can't show in family time is the swearing. Now you can't tell me that there was no swearing in schools in the 70s and 80s Britain cos there was, so 70s and 80s Grange Hill was not a 100% accurate representation, but it was still pretty flipping good.
Heres hoping in a few years a Doctor Who style, back to basics revival will take place in a slot that can appeal to young uns, nostalgia freaks and people who like good drama (Skins, the show we are always being told the youth watch also has a large following of wrinklies too) with people who know what they are doing creating it. Until then the verdict is this:
the BBC bottled it.
