Johnny Briggs (not the actor)

Postby franco on Sat Jul 26, 2008 10:34 pm

Did anyone ever watch this TV programme when it was on!?? Ace programme. i can even vaugly recall it having a repeat run in the early 1990's at the weekends. Who could forget Rita the eldest Sister or Albert the middle Brother, or even Humphry the oldest Brother who was very educated.

I alway's recall too the actor who played Johnny's Dad had slight fame years later as Mel Owen/Beale's Dad on EastEnders.

Edit** I am sure I have still got part's of old Episodes on tape of Johnny Briggs.

Who could forget this series Franco? Certainly not my mum, whos' a nurse (groaaaaan).

The scrapes Jonny, Pam and his brothers and sisters got in to were legendary. Who could not recall the time they ruined a bit of the icing on that cake and had to replace it with toothpaste!!

I loved Jonny Briggs! It had a top theme tune as well :D

The stroppy sister was certainly memorable and I've never been able to separate that character from the actress when she's been in other programmes.

That clip illustrated that the young actor who played Jonny Briggs had ball skills. He could get it down on the deck and play a bit. A teacher of mine at school (Mr Moby for what its worth) insists that the lad who played Jonny Briggs ended up stacking shelves in a supermarket near where he was from.

I am sure there was a third series of Jonny Briggs that was shown as part of Jackanory and didn't feature actors but whoever was reading the story walking round the set of the series (or a similiar one) telling the story. It was called Jonny Briggs and the Junior Tennis. Beat that for a bit of obscure trivia!

I know what you mean. I used to think exactly the same thing when she used to play Jonny Briggs's sister in dinnerladies!

That actually sounds a bit poignant. A bit like going back to a school reunion and discovering you're the only one who's turned up!

It was. I liken it to the final scene of Hi de Hi, when Su Pollard walked around an empty Maplins for the final time. Although for this particular Jackanory series it was actor Bernard Holley rather than the starting together star on walking round an empty set duties. I imagine by 1991, when the series was screened, the actors were too old to play the parts they once did and the actress who played Jonny Brigg's sister was busy playing Jonny Brigg's sister in Spatz or something equally time consuming.

I'm afraid I've another claim to fame, I went to the same Youth Theatre and college as Tommy Robinson (Our Albert - the chap in the above clip in the striped shirt) and we met up this year after not seeing each other for about twenty years!

He is now a Head of Drama at a School!
