Jackanory

Postby David Mitchell's Mom on Thu Feb 12, 2009 8:47 pm

"I'll tell you a story of Jackanory, And now my story's begun..." ...

I caught the story of Jackanory this week on BBC4. I thought Jackanory was fabulous. Bernard Cribbins revealed how someone told him that Jackanory had encouraged him to want to read.

I'm not sure if Jackanory gave me an interest in reading books, but, do remember after watching The Hobbit read on Jackanory I felt compelled to borrow The Lord of the Rings from the Library, read it and loved it.

Good old Jackanory. :D

Anyone else a Jackanory watcher and listener? Any books, stories or readers stand out?
I'm not David Mitchell's Mom. I'd just like to adopt him. Nooo not David Mitchell the comedian. Little David Mitchell from Grange Hill Series Three!

Ooh yes, I used to love this as a kid. The Roald Dahl books with their great illustrations are the ones that stand out most in my memory. But it was all great. I'll always associate Jackanory with having the hiccups, though, as I remember once getting them during an episode and not being able to shake them off for hours afterwards!

Didn't Prince Charles do a Jackanory once? Christ, talk about scraping the barrel!

Rik Mayall did a great reading of "George's Marvellous Medicine" - part of it was shown when BBC4 did their retrospective of the series; love to see all of it. Oh for the benefit of hindsight, and to record all these lost treasures.
