Great films that are never shown on TV

Film buff heaven! A place to discuss the world of movies.

Great films that are never shown on TV

Postby Hughesy on Sat Mar 15, 2008 12:41 am

I got the idea for this thread from a message Jones left recently in the Guess the Movie Picture thread over in the Games & Quizzes section. Anyway, what film or films would you say has been criminally ignored by TV stations and doesn't seem to have been screened by any of them for donkey's years, despite being a cinematic masterpiece - or just plain enjoyable?

There must be loads of these, anyway, as the stations in GB do seem hopelessly unimaginative and seem to fall back on the same American films time and time again.

Your thoughts please, people!

Drop-Out Father starring Dick Van Dyke.

I think it was only ever screened once (I still have it on video, recorded from TV many moons ago). It's magic! Along with A Matter of Life and Death, this is the film I put on when I need a 'pick-me up' or need to put my troubles into perspective. :D

Here's a link to the details if you've not had the pleasure

I'm not David Mitchell's Mom. I'd just like to adopt him. Nooo not David Mitchell the comedian. Little David Mitchell from Grange Hill Series Three!

Oh, there are so many.
There's a weird film I saw in the late eighties called Parents. It was a horror film about a kid who thought his parents were making him eat people for dinner. Totally bizarre and I've no idea if I'd still like it but I remember being fascinated by it when I saw it.
Wikipedia says it's on dvd but I can't find it for under £70.00 which is a lot to pay for a moment of nostalgia.

I'd not heard of that one before, but just looked it up and it looks good! It's available to buy as part of a Sid James Collection DVD pack, which also features Make Mine A Million (another one I'd not heard of before) and The Lavender Hill Mob. Might have to fork out for this one myself actually! (Best price seems to be Sendit.com's £7.39: http://www.sendit.com/dvd/item/7001000130447)

Oh Breaking Away is fantastic! I think that might have been on late one night last Christmas actually, but as usual at that time of year it got lost amid the whelter of great films shown on all the channels over that two-week period. And then the rest of the year we hardly get anything on the terrestrial channels. Go figure!

The Odd Job, almost a Python movie, hasn't been shown for twenty years, to my recollection - has David Jason trying to kill off, by his own request, Graham Chapman. Only available - cheaply though - on VHS.
